Newcastle Reportedly Considering Signing Lukaku

In a surprising turn of events, Newcastle United is rumored to be considering a shock move for former Chelsea and Manchester United striker, Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian striker, currently showcasing his goal-scoring prowess with AS Roma under the management of Jose Mourinho, has reportedly caught the eye of Newcastle’s scouting team.

Lukaku has been in stellar form in Italy, netting nine goals in just 15 appearances for Roma this season. Belgian outlet Voetbalkrant has suggested that Newcastle sees Lukaku as a valuable addition to enhance their attacking options for the upcoming season, providing healthy competition for their current in-form forwards, Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson.

Despite Lukaku’s previous success in the Premier League with West Brom, Everton, and Manchester United, there are reservations about his willingness to return to England. The 30-year-old striker, who rejoined Chelsea in 2021 for a record-breaking £97.5 million, struggled to replicate his earlier successes in the Premier League, leading to a loan move after scoring just 15 times in 44 appearances.

Roma is reportedly keen on securing Lukaku’s services permanently, with sources indicating that Chelsea might entertain an offer around £35 million next summer, marking a significant drop from their initial investment. However, as a Premier League rival, Newcastle could face heightened demands for a higher bid.

The ongoing tug-of-war for Lukaku’s signature is expected to intensify if he continues his impressive form for Roma. Even with the potential departure of Jose Mourinho, Antonio Conte, who previously worked with Lukaku at Inter Milan, could be a key factor in the striker’s decision. However, staying in Italy might require Lukaku to consider a reduction in his current £325,000-a-week wages. As the transfer saga unfolds, Newcastle’s pursuit of the prolific striker adds an intriguing twist to the upcoming transfer window.
