President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to the late Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, former Chief Justice of Nigeria, who passed away on June 6, 2025, at the age of 88.
In a condolence message, Tinubu described Uwais as a courageous jurist who exhibited exceptional integrity throughout his career.
Tinubu highlighted Uwais’s significant contributions to Nigeria’s judiciary, noting that he led the judiciary during a challenging period in the nation’s history with tact, patience, and a strong sense of duty.
He emphasised that Justice Mohammed played a stabilising role that helped usher in the current democratic dispensation, having the distinct honour of swearing in the elected president on May 29, 1999.
After his retirement, Uwais was appointed by the Federal Government to head a panel investigating the conduct of elections in Nigeria.
Tinubu remarked that Uwais was the right person for this assignment due to his pedigree and personal integrity. The panel, under Uwais’s leadership, produced a critical report containing a detailed analysis of the electoral system.
Tinubu concluded by stating that, in both active service and retirement, Justice Uwais maintained a dignified persona, earning him respect beyond his immediate constituency.
