Eight alleged vandals of armoured cables and streetlights in the state’s capital of Kastina have been taken into custody by the Katsina Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, or NSCDC.

This was revealed by the command’s spokesperson, DSC Buhari Hamisu, on Tuesday in Katsina when the suspects were paraded in front of reporters.

According to Hamisu, a few of the suspects were taken into custody before the start of the demonstration.

He said:

“On July 26, the NSCDC’s Special Anti-vandal team apprehended 25-year-old Salmanu Mas’ud of Kofar Yandaka area, in Katsina metropolis.

“He specialises in vandalising public infrastructure and theft.

“During the investigation, he confessed to committing the crimes, in the company of one Aminu, alias ‘Danhajiya’, now at large.

“Further investigation revealed that the suspects had vandalised armoured cable of streetlights at the same location and sold to scrap dealers, now at large, at the cost of N27,000.”

Hamisu also said that on July 28, Shamsu Sani, also 25 years old, of opposite General Hospital, Katsina, and 18-year-old Muhammadu Ahmed of Saulawa Area were arrested.

“The suspects, who also specialised in vandalising streetlights, armoured cables and theft, were arrested for their criminal act at Kofar Sauri,” he added.

In addition, Hamisu stated that Muhammadu Ahmed, 18, of the Saulawa Area, and Shamsu Sani, 25, of the General Hospital across from Katsina, were taken into custody on July 28.

He said that the suspects had admitted to carrying out the crime.

He said that the inquiry revealed that the suspects vandalised the streetlight armoured cable behind General Hospital around a month ago and sold it to a scrap trader for N23,000.

Hamisu further stated that five additional accused vandals were apprehended in other parts of the state and all confessed to the offences.
