On May 21, 2025, Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, witnessed significant protests following the alleged killing of Emmanuella Ahenjir, a 23-year-old final-year student at the Federal University, Wukari.
According to reports, Emmanuella was fatally shot by unidentified police officers at the Wurukum roundabout while travelling from the Gyado Villa area of the town on the morning of May 16.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with numerous youths taking to the streets to demand justice. Prominent gender rights activist Ukan Kurugh led the demonstrators, who gathered at the Wurukum roundabout holding placards bearing messages such as “End Police Brutality” and “Justice for Emmanuella.”
The protesters are calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Emmanuella’s death and immediate action from the authorities to address the issue of police brutality. As of now, there has been no official response from the police regarding the incident.
This protest adds to a series of demonstrations across Nigeria addressing concerns over police conduct and the safety of citizens, particularly students. The community continues to seek accountability and reforms to prevent such tragedies in the future.
