Wild animals, including a python, a crocodile, and a cub, have been evacuated from the residence of Ahmed Idris, the former Accountant General of the Federation, and relocated to the Kano Zoo.
The move followed public panic after the python escaped from Idris’ home in Kano, causing alarm in nearby communities such as Daneji, Mandawari, and Kabara.
Sadik Kura Muhammad, Managing Director of Kano Zoo, confirmed the evacuation in an interview with a local radio station on Sunday. He stated that Idris voluntarily surrendered the animals to the zoo after residents raised concerns.
Muhammad clarified that the former AGF had a valid license permitting him to keep the animals and emphasised that they were not yet at a stage where they posed a significant threat to the public.
Under Nigeria’s Wild Animal Law, individuals are allowed to keep certain wild animals, including both endangered and non-endangered species, under regulated conditions.
However, Muhammad explained that endangered species—such as parrots and vultures—must only be kept in zoos for conservation purposes, not for private ownership. “The law supports the reproduction and survival of endangered animals in controlled environments, not for personal amusement,” he said.
The incident has sparked discussions about the legality and safety of keeping wild animals in residential areas, even with proper licensing. While Idris complied with regulations, the escape of the python raised questions about potential risks to the community. Authorities have assured the public that the animals are now safely housed in the zoo, where they will be properly cared for under professional supervision.
The evacuation highlights the need for stricter enforcement of wildlife regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future. Residents have expressed relief following the removal of the animals, though some remain concerned about the broader implications of private ownership of exotic wildlife in urban areas.
The Kano Zoo management has reiterated its commitment to wildlife conservation and public safety, urging individuals to adhere to legal guidelines when keeping wild animals.
