House of Representatives has raised concerns about a potential healthcare crisis in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), citing overstretched medical facilities and a critical shortage of personnel.
This follows a motion presented by Hon. Nnamdi Ezechi during a plenary session on May 21, 2025.
Ezechi highlighted the severe strain on FCT’s healthcare system, noting that many government hospitals, built decades ago, have not been expanded to accommodate the rapidly growing population.
This has led to overcrowded facilities, insufficient bed spaces, and a lack of medical staff, resulting in long waiting times and preventable deaths.
He emphasised that the shortage of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers further exacerbates the situation, compromising the quality of care and increasing the burden on existing staff.
Without immediate intervention, Ezechi warned, the healthcare crisis could escalate, threatening the well-being of FCT residents.
In response, the House resolved to:
Urge the Federal Ministry of Health and the FCT Administration to assess the current state of health facilities, identifying areas needing expansion, upgrades, and resource allocation.
Establish an ad-hoc committee to investigate the condition of healthcare facilities in the FCT and report back within four weeks with recommendations.
Call on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the FCT’s healthcare system, ensuring the release of emergency funds for hospital upgrades, the recruitment of medical personnel, and the acquisition of essential medical equipment.
This proactive approach aims to address the pressing healthcare challenges in the FCT and safeguard the health rights of its residents.
