The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed the addition of 120 megawatts of electricity to the national grid following the successful commissioning of new transmission infrastructure.
This development comes as part of ongoing efforts to improve power supply across the country and reduce the frequent grid collapses that have plagued Nigeria’s electricity sector.
According to TCN officials, the additional capacity was achieved through the completion of critical upgrades at several transmission substations. The newly added power will help stabilise electricity distribution to various regions, particularly areas that have experienced persistent power shortages.
The project involved the installation of new transformers and the reinforcement of transmission lines to enhance efficiency and reliability.
The TCN emphasised that this milestone represents a significant step in the federal government’s plan to expand Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure.
With the national grid currently operating below its potential capacity, the injection of 120MW is expected to provide relief to both residential and industrial consumers who have long struggled with an inconsistent power supply.
Energy experts have welcomed the development but caution that more investments are needed to address the country’s growing electricity demands. They note that while the additional capacity is commendable, sustained improvements in generation, transmission, and distribution are necessary to achieve a stable power supply nationwide.
The TCN has assured Nigerians of its commitment to ongoing upgrades, with several other projects at various stages of completion. These efforts align with the government’s broader objective of achieving at least 20,000MW of operational capacity in the coming years. Further updates on grid expansion initiatives will be provided as work progresses.
