Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has called for a national discussion on the possible impeachment of President Bola Tinubu, citing his administration’s failure to address the ongoing killings in Benue State.
Yesufu argued that the government’s inability to protect citizens from violent attacks justifies serious political consequences, including impeachment proceedings.
Recent attacks in Benue have left dozens dead and many others displaced, raising concerns about the effectiveness of the country’s security apparatus. Aisha Yesufu criticised Tinubu’s administration for not taking decisive action to end the violence, accusing the president of neglecting his constitutional duty to safeguard lives and property. She emphasised that elected officials must be held accountable when they fail to deliver on their primary responsibility of ensuring security.
Yesufu’s remarks have sparked debates among Nigerians, with some supporting her call for impeachment while others view it as too drastic. Supporters argue that the persistent insecurity across the country, particularly in Benue, demands urgent and serious measures. Critics, however, believe that impeachment should only follow constitutional procedures and not be based solely on public dissatisfaction.
The activist urged citizens to demand accountability from their leaders, stressing that silence in the face of failure only encourages further negligence. She also called on the National Assembly to prioritise the security crisis and consider all possible actions, including impeachment, if the president does not take immediate steps to address the situation.
Aisha Yesufu’s statement highlights growing frustration over Nigeria’s insecurity and raises questions about the government’s commitment to protecting its citizens. As the debate continues, many await Tinubu’s response and any concrete measures to restore peace in Benue and other affected regions.
