Twitter Threatens Lawsuit Against Instagram Owner Over Intellectual Theft

Twitter has threatened to sue Meta over its new Threads platform. Instagram, Meta’s parent company, launched Threads on Wednesday, July 5, a text-based companion to Instagram that is comparable to other text-based social networks such as Twitter.

On Thursday, Zuckerberg revealed that Threads had already signed up 30 million users on its first day. This figure far outnumbers many outnumbering rivals.

According to Forbes, Alex Spiro, a Twitter attorney, addressed a letter to Meta CEO, Zuckerberg. The letter accuses him of exploiting the company’s “trade secrets and other intellectual property” to launch its Threads app, a competitor to Twitter.

The lawyer wrote:

“Twitter intends to strictly enforce its intellectual property rights, and demands that Meta take immediate steps to stop using any Twitter trade secrets or other highly confidential information.

“Twitter reserves all rights, including, but not limited to, the right to seek both civil remedies and injunctive relief without further notice to prevent any further retention, disclosure, or use of its intellectual property by Meta”.

Spiro also accused Meta of employing dozens of ex-Twitter workers. According to him, they had access to Twitter’s trade secrets and other sensitive information. He claims that they made use of that knowledge in constructing the Threads’ programme.
