Following the draw of the Under 20 World  Cup competition held on Friday in Zurich, Switzerland, the Flying Eagles of Nigeria will be facing Italy, Brazil, and the Dominican Republic in Group D of the competition.

The competition is scheduled to hold from May 10 to June 11, 2023.

Nigeria qualified for the tournament after clinching bronze at the U-20 AFCON held earlier in the year. Twice, the Flying Eagles reached the final in 1989 and 2005. In the latter, the West Africans lost to 2-1 to a Lionel Messi-inspired Argentine side.

Coach Ladan Bosso and his Flying Eagles team will have to start strongly if they are to make any appreciable impact at next month’s tournament in Argentina.

Aside from Nigeria, three other African countries, Senegal, The Gambia, and Tunisia—will be vying for honours.

African champions Senegal will confront Colombia, Japan and Israel in group C while African 1st runners the Gambia will play in group F alongside France, Korea and Honduras.

Nigeria targets winning the competition to become the second African country after Ghana won the trophy in 2009.
