Sonia, the daughter of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has shared her thoughts on her parents’ recent conviction for organ trafficking by a UK court. In an interview with BBC, Sonia expressed shock at being arrested alongside her parents. She also admitted her bias towards them while disagreeing with their conviction.
Sonia also discussed her own kidney condition, revealing that she has lymphatic syndrome. Her family had generally taken care of everything regarding her search for a kidney. She did not directly respond to questions about the portrayal of the 21-year-old Nigerian man who was brought to the UK for a “kidney donation” and said she has received many donors since the case became public.
Despite the circumstances, Sonia said her parents do not feel anger towards the man. Especially since his testimony led to their imprisonment further claiming that they remain calm when she visits them in jail. She also expressed guilt over the situation, believing that everything happened because of her.
The Central Criminal Court in Old Bailey sentenced Ike Ekweremadu to nine years and eight months in prison. His wife, Beatrice, got four years and six months for their involvement in organ trafficking.
