President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commissioned a new 40,000 cubic meter Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) vessel, named “MT Iyaloja (Lagos),” in Ulsan, South Korea.
The president emphasised that this milestone underscores Nigeria’s commitment to delivering clean and sustainable energy solutions both domestically and across the African continent. He was represented at the ceremony by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo.
The newly christened vessel is owned by WAGL Energy Limited, a joint venture between NNPC Limited and the Sahara Group. It is a dual-fuel, fully refrigerated LPG carrier designed to enhance the transportation of cleaner energy sources.
This addition increases WAGL’s total LPG vessel capacity to 162,000 cubic meters, joining other vessels in its fleet such as the MT Africa Gas, MT Sahara Gas, MT BaruMK, and MT Sapet.
President Tinubu commended the strategic foresight and technical excellence demonstrated by WAGL Energy, NNPC Limited, and the Sahara Group. He highlighted their dedication to expanding Africa’s participation in the global clean energy value chain as a critical step toward sustainable development.
The Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari described the new vessel as a significant asset that will support Nigeria’s gas development initiatives.
Represented by the Executive Vice President for Gas, Power & New Energy, Mr. Olalekan Ogunleye, he reiterated NNPC’s commitment to enhancing the affordability, availability, and accessibility of LPG nationwide.
Mr. Temitope Shonubi, WAGL’s Chairman and Executive Director at Sahara Group, noted that the expansion reflects the company’s vision of responsibly addressing Africa’s energy infrastructure challenges.
He dedicated the vessel to the legacy of the iconic Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, symbolising progress and empowerment. WAGL’s Managing Director, Mr. Mohammed Sani Bello, also confirmed plans to further expand the fleet with a Small Gas Carrier and a Very Large Gas vessel within the next two years.
