FG vows to impose reciprocal visa measures on US citizens

Federal Government has announced it will implement reciprocal visa measures against American citizens in response to a new set of stringent visa rules introduced by the United States.

Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that Nigeria had been briefed in advance by the US Mission in Abuja regarding the policy changes.

The Ministry stated that while the new US policy was anticipated, Nigeria would not hesitate to respond similarly.

The spokesperson emphasised that reciprocal action is the appropriate response in such matters, indicating that Nigerian authorities would adopt comparable measures for US citizens applying for visas to enter Nigeria.

To coordinate this response, the government will convene an inter-agency meeting involving the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Interior, and the National Intelligence Agency. The goal of this meeting is to develop a comprehensive and unified national strategy to address the new US visa regime.

The recent changes by the US, under President Donald Trump’s administration, include limiting most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas for Nigerians to single-entry permits valid for only three months. The US State Department described these measures as part of a global visa reciprocity process intended to protect the integrity of US immigration systems.

Additional new requirements mandate that visa applicants disclose extensive personal information, including all social media handles, email addresses, usernames, and telephone numbers used over the past five years.

The US Mission warned that providing inaccurate information could result in visa denial or future ineligibility.

Furthermore, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services has introduced a stricter “Good Moral Character” policy for naturalisation applicants, requiring officers to review everyday conduct, community contributions, employment history, and tax compliance.
