Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has called on members of the Joint Tax Board (JTB) to work towards establishing an effective and equitable tax system that aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s national tax reforms.
The Governor made this appeal during the opening ceremony of the 2025 Joint Tax Board Strategic Retreat, held at the Ikogosi Warm Springs Resort in Ekiti State on Friday.
Governor Oyebanji emphasized that a robust and fair tax system is essential for driving sustainable economic growth and improving citizen welfare. He commended President Tinubu for initiating what he described as far-reaching reforms aimed at raising living standards across the country.
The Governor outlined the key objectives of the new tax legislation, which include broadening the tax base, improving revenue mobilisation, simplifying compliance processes, promoting transparency and accountability within revenue agencies, and accelerating the digitalisation of tax administration.
He stressed that the implementation of the bill, scheduled to begin in January 2026, will fundamentally reshape how Nigeria generates revenue and delivers sustainable development.
Governor Oyebanji charged the participants—including the Executive Chairmen of the Internal Revenue Services from all 36 states—to engage in thorough deliberations on the implications of the new law for national development.
He described the policy as a pivotal shift toward building a resilient and self-reliant economy. The Governor praised the President’s courage and vision, expressing confidence that these reforms will reposition Nigeria for long-term greatness and shape the nation’s economic trajectory for years to come.
