Email marketing is the act of sending a commercial message, typically to a group of people, using email. Every email sent to a potential or current customer could be considered email marketing. It involves using email to send advertisements, request business, or solicit sales or donations. When I built my first product, I was so sure that I would get all my customers via email. I thought by showing them the relevance of it they would not mind the intrusion of their mailboxes. “After all”, I thought to myself, “It is relevant”. I remember making a list of emails through my last company and immediately setting out to use that to build my first customer base. Oh boy, I was so wrong. I opened ‘mail chimp’ and set everything up. I put up a nice paragraph and off it went to about 2000 emails. In less than 1 hour, my email was blocked due to several spam reports.
I learned my lesson the hard way and I’m hetre to prevent you from making the same mistakes.”
Spamming is not email marketing. Spam makes recipients angry, hurts future email deliverability efforts, and harms your company in the long run. Do not spam people. Email marketing is not spamming. The best spamming can get you is probably 1 out of 2000 email responses which would most likely be an automated response.
Email marketing is one of the best ways to convert prospects while retaining and monetizing existing customers if done right. You can use email marketing to get customer feedback. You can make use of polls to find out what features people love best and make informed decisions about them. It is one of the easiest ways to carry out user research.
