The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has publicly refuted a claim made by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) regarding the cause of a recent blackout.
The disagreement concerns a power outage that affected EEDC’s franchise areas, including Anambra State and parts of Enugu State.
EEDC had attributed the widespread blackout to an explosion at a TCN substation located in Awada, stating the incident occurred in the early hours of the morning.
However, the TCN has firmly denied this account. In a statement released by its spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, the transmission company clarified that no explosion took place at its Onitsha sub-region station.
Instead, the TCN provided a technical explanation for the partial loss of power. According to the company, the incident was caused by an insulation flashover on a porcelain insulator connecting a jumper conductor to a busbar.
This fault, which occurred during rainfall, triggered a partial outage in the 330KV switch yard at Onitsha. The TCN confirmed that the power supply was successfully restored later that same day.
Furthermore, the TCN noted that a scheduled maintenance outage was already planned for the end of the month to replace the very stack of porcelain insulators involved in this incident.
The company concluded its statement by urging EEDC to ensure the accuracy of the information it disseminates to the public, describing the propagation of incorrect details as unprofessional and unacceptable.
