Tinubu’s reforms bold but lacking in structure – Yabagi Sani

Yabagi Sani, the National Chairman of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) and former presidential candidate, has raised concerns about the ongoing economic reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. Sani acknowledged that while the reforms are bold and theoretically sound, they lack the necessary structure to yield meaningful benefits for ordinary Nigerians.

Speaking during a radio program on Eagle 102.5 FM in Ilese-Ijebu, Ogun State, Sani explained that policies such as the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of exchange rates are in line with conventional economic principles. However, he argued that implementing such sweeping reforms in an economy as fragile as Nigeria’s, without adequate supporting structures, has resulted in increased hardship for the population.

According to Yabagi Sani, Tinubu is pushing for a highly capitalist economic model in a society that is still grappling with deep-rooted poverty and inequality. He noted that while the intentions may be right, the pace and method of execution are proving counterproductive. “What Bola Ahmed Tinubu is attempting is to implement a highly geared capitalist economy in an environment that is substantially weak and poor,” he said.

Sani highlighted that the number of Nigerians living below the poverty line has grown significantly, rising from around 103 million to 129 million since the current administration took office. He attributed this surge largely to the removal of subsidies and the failure to provide adequate palliatives or economic buffers for the poor.

Yabagi Sani warned that unless the administration shifts its approach to one that is more inclusive and better structured, it risks alienating the very people it aims to uplift. He urged the government to match its bold policy moves with solid institutional frameworks and practical support systems to truly improve living conditions across the country.
