To Multi-Task or not to Multi- Task is the Problem.

The ability to multi-task can be a lifesaver. Owing to how fast-paced life is, a person might need to carry out many tasks simultaneously. Do you think you can successfully do two things at the same time? Yes, you might be able to combine some activities without losing focus. For example, if you listen to music while you clean your room, your room will probably look okay. But when you try to do two tasks that require concentration, both are likely to suffer. Here is why.

It Complicates Things

People who try to multitask make life unnecessarily hard on themselves. For example, it usually takes them longer to complete their homework. Or they might have to spend time redoing work that they thought was finished. Either way, multitaskers end up with less free time to do the things that they want to.

It is Bad for your Memory

A growing body of research has found that it’s far less efficient to try to do two or more things at once than to focus on just one task at a time. Multitasking can interfere with working memory, cause students to do worse in school, and could possibly even create potentially long-term memory problems.

What You Should Rather Do

Instead of trying to do two things at the same time, here are a few suggestions that could help:

Train yourself to focus on one task at a time

It requires a conscious effort to focus on a specific task without becoming distracted. And it can be challenging, especially if you are used to combining activities—studying with texting, for example. While you read, you could feel compelled to peruse your phone every now and then. Try to be strong-willed. Hold yourself back from losing focus.

Eliminate distractions

You could also try ensuring that things that distract you are not within reach. For instance, are you tempted to check your phone while studying? Put it in another room. Turn off the TV, and don’t even think about social media. This could help.

Remember, that you have to be determined to focus on a task at a time. It increases your productivity and sets a pattern that your mind and body eventually get used to.
