Governor Muhammad Umar Bago of Niger State has instructed the State Urban Development Board (NSUDB) and other relevant authorities to remove any structures built on waterways in Minna and its surrounding areas to mitigate flooding.
After viewing certain regions impacted by recent heavy rain in Minna, the Governor issued the order through his Deputy Governor, Yakubu Garba.
Governor Muhammad Umar Bago declared an end to the era of issuing verbal orders without taking action. Furthermore, the Governor urged individuals who have constructed structures on waterways to promptly remove them, as no warning notices will be issued.
The Deputy Governor, who is also the Chairman of the State Emergency Management Agency, NSEMA, stated that a technical team comprised of NSEMA, NSUDB, and the Niger State Environmental Protection Agency, NISEPA, as well as security agencies, will go around to assess the structures on waterways.
“We must give way for the free flow of water,” he insisted.
The state government will ensure debris removal from waterways to facilitate smooth water flow through the appropriate authorities. We urge locals to avoid dumping trash in rivers, as anyone caught doing so will face prosecution.
