negative effects of excessive screen time

The average person’s screen time has increased over the last few years, going from about four hours per day in 2009 to just over eight hours per day in 2020. That’s double the screen time every day! While there are plenty of benefits to being on your screen, too much of it can have some negative effects on your health. Let’s take a closer look at how excessive screen time can hurt you and how you can minimize its negative effects.

Effects of Excessive Screen Time.

Screen time can lead to some negative effects including but not restricted to;

  • Decreased sleep quality
  • Increased stress levels
  • Loneliness
  • Poor academic performance.
  • Poor health.
  • Eye problems.
  • Shortened attention span, etc.

Researchers have found that children of parents who spend excessive amounts of time in front of the screen are more likely to experience depression and anxiety. In addition, when these children become older, a lack of communication between parents and children may cause social problems for them. If a child is not taught how to interact with other people face-to-face, they may find it difficult when communicating with other people their own age. Unhealthy lifestyle habits (e.g., lack of exercise) which also leads to a higher risk of developing heart disease and type 2 diabetes later on in life.

How to Limit Screen Time.

Limit screen time to less than two hours per day. If you think your child is spending too much time on screens, talk to them about it and see if they are interested in talking with a counsellor or other professional who can help you find solutions. It’s important to balance online activities with offline activities so children can develop social skills, emotional well-being, and physical health.

As you can see, there are many negative effects that come with using your digital devices too much. The best way to combat this is by setting a timer on your phone or device and limiting the amount of time you are on your device every day. This will help prevent any negative effects from occurring while still being able to use your device as much as you want!
